When the MS Trust carried out a study on exercise they were shocked by the results, only 48% of people with MS do any form of exercise. To counter this they have produced a CD-ROM of ways to keep active. The CD-ROM includes, contact details for organisations involved with more than 30 activities, a Tried & Tested section of personal experiences, a selection of links to more leisurely activities such as gardening and photography, general information about fitness for people with MS and research into the value of exercise for people with MS.

Keeping active when you have MS

This page gives details on a pamphlet produced by the MS Society to advise you on exercise. It gives details on the content and allows you to download it. The booklet examines the types of exercise you can do, how to do it and how to keep cool. They also have contact details for a wide variety of organisations so you can enquire about where you can do T'ai chi or aerobics in your area.

General Exercise

This feature from the MS Resource Centre gives details on various types of exercise that you can do such as swimming and yoga. It also gives ten reasons why you should exercise, these include improved muscle tone, strength and better circulation.

Exercises for people with MS

This fantastic booklet from the MS Trust is written by a senior physiotherapist who has worked with people with MS for many years. She looks at the questions most people ask, gives pointers on good posture and how it can benefit you. Most of the booklet is dedicated to describing and demonstrating exercises; these are divided between standing, kneeling, lying and sitting positions.

Exercise and Fatigue

This short article from the Multiple Sclerosis International Federation looks at the link between exercise and fatigue. It examines the different types of fatigue and the impact of exercise.

Exercise by the Aga

In this article written by the wife of politician Malcolm Rifkind we see how exercise can be introduce into everyday life. She talks about how she does stretches as part of her everyday routine and how they make her feel.

Kitchen Cupboard Aerobics

This is a light hearted article form the BBC Radio 4 program ‘HomeTruths’. The author has MS and talks about how his exercise regime has changed. His regime now includes bathroom surfing, yoga, golf and the hall triple jump!

Personal exercise

This is a feature from the MS Trust’s magazine written by a sport and exercise science consultant. The aim of the article is to demonstrate how a structured and monitored exercise program benefited one of his female clients with MS. It focuses on the key areas, or hurdles, and gives exercise tips.
